Introduction The cultural and psychological topic that Iââ¬â¢ve chosen is male depression. Male Depression is a condition that currently impacts the lives of one in ten American men at one point or another. Depression varies in its severity throughout different cultures, and it is progressively becoming more and more of a significant health concern worldwide. While a 10% prevalence of depression among men in the U.S. may seem relatively high, it is important to note that this figure encompasses all types of depression. Many males suffering from depression experience occasional bouts of the condition over a lifetime, usually brought on by a specific situation or major life event. Some people get psychotherapy, while others also take antidepressants or seek alternative treatments. Exercise can also play a significant role in helping to treat depression in males. There are also alternative options that your doctor may suggest such as brain stimulation techniques such as electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation, or vagus nerve stimulation. For those with bipolar depression, doctors may prescribe different types of medications, such as mood-stabilizing drugs or certain antipsychotic medicines, instead of antidepressants. Nonetheless every male is different, so it may take some trial and error for them to find the ideal treatment for their condition. Situational vs. Severe Depression One distinction that is made amongst the psychological community when it comes to depression is the difference between situational and severe recurring depression. Situational depression is a short-term form of depression that can occur in the aftermath of various traumatic events in oneââ¬â¢s life, including divorce, retirement, loss of a job and the death of a relative or close friend. Doctors sometimes refer to the condition as adjustment disorder.
